Tom Eckersley Biography
Der Brite Tom Eckersley besucht von 1930 bis 1934 die School of Art and Design an der Universität von Salford, bei Manchester. Er wird Grafikdesigner und Werbegrafiker. 1934 eröffnet Tom Eckersley mit Eric Lombers, mit dem er studiert hat, in London ein Grafikbüro, das sie bis 1940 gemeinsam führen. 1937 bis 1939 lehrt Tom Eckersley an der Westminster School of Art. Tom Eckersley arbeitet für Firmen wie London Transport, Shell-Mex, British Petroleum, die British Broadcasting Company (BBC), Austin Reed sowie die britische Post. In den Kriegsjahren ab 1940 entwirft Tom Eckersley Grafiken und vor allem Plakate für das Britische Informationsministerium, die Royal Society for the Preventing of Accidents und die Royal Air Force, für letztere fertigt er auch Kartenmaterial an. Für seine während des Krieges entstandenen Grafikarbeiten wird Tom Eckersley 1949 mit dem Order of the British Empire ausgezeichnet, 1950 wird er in die Alliance Graphique International aufgenommen. Am London College of Printing leitet Tom Eckersley von 1958 bis 1978 den Fachbereich Design. 1976 fertigt Tom Eckersley mehrere Wandgemälde an für den neuen Bahnhof des Flughafens Heathrow.
