László Lakner was born in Budapest in 1936. Lakner was trained at the Grammar School of Fine Arts in Budapest which resulted in him studying painting at the Academy of Arts in Budapest under Professor Aurél. László Lakner was granted a one-month scholarship by the Museum Folkwang in Essen in 1968. Further scholarships followed, for example "Deutsche Kritiker Preis" in Berlin and a one-year scholarship of PS1, New York. László Lakner settled in Germany in 1974. He was awarded the ultimate distinction, the Kossuth Prize, by the Hungarian government in 1998. Nowadays László Lakner lives and works in Berlin and Hessen.
