Lady Laura Theresa Alma-Tadema
Biography
The British painter and illustrator Lady Laura Theresa Alma-Tadema was born in Londonin 1852 . As of 1871 she was a student of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, whom she married the same year. The artist was committed to genre painting in the style of 17th century Dutch porcelain painters. She mainly produced domestic scenes, of which many describe the lives of children in interior scenes with a splendor that calls reminiscence of ancient themes. Besides that she made pastel portraits, small Italian landscapes and classical subjects. Above all it is the works of classic content, which can easily confused with works by her husband and teacher Lawrence Alma-Tadema for their stylistic resemblance. Laura Theresa's neatly executed paintings soon gained great popularity. Since 1873 the artist exhibited at the Royal Academy, followed by a participation in the International Exhibition in Paris in 1878. The British artist was also regularly represented on German exhibitions since 1881 and won the gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin in 1886. In addition to liberal art she was also active as a commercial artist making illustrations for "The English Illustrated Magazine". Lady Laura Theresa Alma-Tadema died in London in 1909. Today her paintings can be found in international museums such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
