Jacobus de Voragine
Biography
Biography
Jacobus de Voragine, also known as Jacobus a Voragine or Varagine, was an Italian chronicler and archbishop of Genoa. He was born in Voragine (today Varazze) near Genoa around 1230. Voragine joined the Dominican Order in 1244 and became a professor of theology at the age of 22. He was provincial of Lombardy from 1267 to 1278 and later from 1281 to 1286. During this time Pope Honorius IV. assigned him to appease the civil discords of Genoa between Guelfs and Ghibellines. Voragine became the archbishop of Genoa in 1292. He died in 1298 or 1299, and was buried in the Dominican church at Genoa.
