Edgar Allan Poe's family temporarily moved to Scotland where Poe went to the Old Grammar School in Irvine in 1815 and changed to the boarding school Manor House, Stoke Newington, near London for the next eight years. In 1820 Poe and his family went to New York. In Charlottesville Poe - now seventeen years old - attended the University of Virginia for six months before quitting. 1827 to 1831 he served in the military and then went to Baltimore. From this time on the writer's lifestyle became quite excessive including alcohol and other drugs. Edgar Allan Poe created narratives and detective stories like "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket" and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue".
