Karl (Heinrich) Marx, the founder of Marxism, son of the counsellor of justice Heinrich Marx, was born in Trier on 5 May, 1818. Marx studied political science, philosophy and history in Bonn and Berlin from 1835 to 1841. In 1842/1843 he worked in Cologne as an editor for the liberal "Rheinische Zeitung". Karl Marx married Jenny von Westphalen in 1843 and moved to Paris where he studied socialism and communism and started working closely with Friedrich Engels. In 1845 Marx and Engels wrote "The Holy Family" and "The German Ideology". Later Marx was expelled by the Prussian government and went to Brussels, Engels arrived there soon afterwards. In 1847 Marx and Engels founded the "Deutsche Arbeiter-Bildungsverein". The "Manifesto of the Communist Party" was created in 1848, followed by other important works such as: "The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte" (1852), "A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy" (1859), and particularly "Capital" (1867, volumes 2 and 3, published by F. Engels, 1885-94). On 5 May, 1875 (printed 1890/1891) Marx wrote the "Critique of the Gotha Program" that was adopted as the new program by the Social Democratic Party. Marx died in London on 14 March 1883.
