Alain Jacquet
Biography
Biography
Next to Martial Raysse, the French painter, graphic artist and sculptor Alain Jacquet is regarded a main representative of the French variant of Pop-Art and the style Figuration Narrative.
Alain Georges Frank Jacquet was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1939. After he had studied drama at the University of Grenoble, Alain Jacquet transferred to the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1959, where he studied architecture until 1960. As a painter Alain Jacquet remained self-taught.
In the early 1960s Alain Georges Furuk Jacquet became acquainted with the Nouveaux Réalistes, to be more exact with Yves Klein, Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely. In 1962 he made the first "Camouflages", three-dimensional sculptures painted in colorful camouflage. He employed the same principle for ironic paintings, but soon Alain Jacquet went a step further: Around 1963/64 he combined reproductions of paintings by old masters with trivial motifs. In his later period of creation Alain Jacquet put a special emphasis on objects of mass culture. Around the middle of the decade Alain Jacquet developed the "Mec Art", for which he enlarged images so much that single color dots become visible.
Accordingly, works made in the 1960s are very close to Pop-Art. When Alain Jacquet presented his works at the Robert Fraser Gallery in London in 1963, he met Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake, Derek Boshier and Allen Jones, the grandmasters of English Pop-Art. In 1964 Alain Jacquet went to New York and met the luminaries of Pop-Art: Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein.
In 1978 Alain Georges Frank Jacquet withdrew to St. Martin, an island of the Antilles. However, two years later he returned to New York and made pictures that show the earth from outer space. Additionally, Alain Jacquet became increasingly occupied with modern print methods and computer images. From then on he lived alternatingly on St. Martin and in New York.
As of 1989 Alain Jacquet left St. Martin and moved to Paris, where he taught at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. In second marriage he married the painter Sophie Matisse, great-granddaughter of Henri Matisse - and granddaughter in -law of Marcel Duchamp.
In 2008 Alain Jacquet died in New York.
