Paul Cézanne Biography
Paul Cézanne is born in Aix-en-Provence on January 19, 1839. He decides to become a painter against his father's will. He is financially dependent on his family throughout his life , as artistic success does not take place until shortly before his death. Cézanne goes to Paris in 1861 in order to copy the old masters in the Louvre. His early works are pastose and raw, the colors thickly applied. He takes on portentous subjects. Paul Cézanne comes into contact with Impressionism through Camille Pissarro, exhibiting works with the Impressionists in 1874 and 1877. Paul Cézanne lives in Auvers-sur-Oise from 1873 to 1879, however, he returns to Aix-en-Provence, where he cuts his own path as a painter, lonely and struggling. Paul Cézanne's painting displays an important development beyond Impressionism. He takes over the light colors from the Impressionists as well as the dashed application of colors and the strong obligation to nature as it is observed and felt. Open air painting in front of the landscape is part of it. Paul Cézanne's painting is obliged to the effigy of what is visible, however, he doe not simply reproduce nature on his canvas, but he wants to represent it by means of color equivalents, by modulating the colors. He attains to create solid and valid impression that parallels nature and not a superficial, coincidental representation of an ever changing surface. Cézanne's work comprises landscapes, still lives, portraits of friends and common people from his surroundings. The motif of the nude, the bathing is taken on by him in a varying manner. The art dealer Ambroise Vollard sets up Cézanne's first one-man show in Paris in 1895, recognition and popularity slowly begin to increase, not only among art lover4s, but mostly among contemporary Paris artists such as Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and later André Derain, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso et al. Works of Cézanne are on exhibition in the Parisian Salon d'Automne for the first time in 1903, further exhibitions follow. He is surprised by a thunderstorm while painting in October 1906, and contracts pneumonia, of which he dies in Aix-en-Provence on October 22, 1906.
