Gaia. 1984-88.
Acrylic on hard fibre board.

Even though Raimer Jochims' painting at first sight appears to be a monochrome green surface, a subtle coloring composed of blue, orange and green tones can be observed when taking a closer look. The title reflects the principle of becoming and growing: Gaia, one of the most important figures in Greek mythology, is the mother archetype and parturient, giving life to , among others, Uranos, the Cyclopes and many Titans. Jochims does not only take on the idea of fertility in the titles, the unusual format, the drip shape calling reminiscence of a vessel, allows for many associations. [KP].
