In diesem Jahr nimmt Erni den Auftrag an, die Odyssee zu illustrieren, die sein Freund, der Verleger Gonin herausgibt. Voll Ehrgeiz und seines Erfolges sicher beabsichtigt Gonin, die Abenteuer des Odysseus in drei monumentalen Foliobänden zu veröffentlichen. Der Künstler muss Dutzende von Illustrationen entwerfen, davon mehrere ganzseitige, dazu Schmuckinitialen für den Anfang jeden Kapitels.
