Weiblicher Rückenakt. 1916/1922.
Tempera.
Lower right monogrammed and dated. On creme wove paper. 52.8 x 34.8 cm (20.7 x 13.7 in), the full sheet.
Between 1920 and 1922 the artist revised the female nude from 1916 with water tempera. Verso with a nearly full-page drawing of a cat. [CH].
• Painted on both sides.
• Particularly harmonious composition of cold and warm colors from Rohlfs' characteristic palette.
• Both the dynamic nude the work is based on, as well as the later expressive pictorial revision are documents of the then highly topical separation from the artistic traditions of Realism.
• Female rear nudes occupy an important position in the artist's oeuvre
.
