As of 1904 landscapes became less important in Rohlf's œuvre, while portraits, nudes and, as of 1907, figure compositions moved to the center of the painter's focus. Just as it is the case with his paintings, Rohlfs also preferred darker and restrained colors for his water-temperas. His figures are no longer dominated by physicality, instead the accent is on posture and gesture. In this case the focus is entirely on the posture, while the head becomes indistinct in front of the dark background. [SM]
