"Bouquet d'arbres en fleurs" is a subtly executed study which presumably has its origin in the preparations of the cycle "L’Éternel Printemps" (Eternal Spring). In 1908 Maurice Denis painted this wall decoration, which comprise ten canvas panels, for the collector and patron Gabriel Thomas (1854-1932), who build a large residence on the hill Bellevue near Meudon in 1895. For the dining room Denis was inspired by the surroundings' lush nature and depicts girls and young women in idyllic, spring-like garden scenes. They bathe, sit at the fountain or gather for music and talks. With the almost exclusive usage of light colors, pastel tones and white, Denis adds an enormous softness to the illustration. The harmonious atmosphere of a "white dream" is created through the partly fragmentary, partly pointillist color application. The scenes of an eternal springcombine a both profane as well as religious ideal so closely that the land turns into a garden Eden and the young women resemble Madonna.
