The art of Peter Zimmermann is known as "Appropriation Art": it examines the relation between original and copy, image and effigy. Existing pictures are the basis of these works - as Peter Zimmermann' book covers as large-size oil paintings on canvas clearly show. These "Book Cover Paintings", made since the 1980s, made the Freiburg artist internationally famous. These oversized book covers, transferred to the art of painting, astonish even today's audience. He preferrably used classics of European culture, such as the series of travel guides "Der Große Polyglott" which coined the collective memory with its characteristic color combinations and typeface.
