With the underplate the transferal of the image‘s structure to a utilitarian object was quite successful. Only after a second glance does one notice how much the design is geared to the function – the decor of a plate. Lichtenstein placed several structure components unconnectedly next to one another, in a way that the patterns recur and almost make an ornament. He expects the decorative effect to increase if several underplates stand on the laid table. Then they make for a large and diversified ornament animated by the plates‘ varied position. (Quote: Prof. Dr. Heinz Spielmann, former director of ‘Landesmuseum Schloß Gottdorf‘, Schleswig).
