"He spent about a year in Egypt and was the first European to penetrate as far as Derr in Nubia and to publish descriptions of any Nubian temples. This important work was the earliest attempt at an elaborate description of Egypt, and its plates are the most significant previous to those by Denon." (Blackmer) - Nice coppers with a portrait of the author, with maps, artefacts, obelisks, statues, temples, views of cities, coasts, landscapes etc. Plates numbered 1-159, 140 and 141 as well as 142 and 143 each on one plate and no. 7, 27, 66 and 108 each on two plates; second plate of no. 22 lacking, also lacking frontispiece of vol. I. - Somewhat foxed, mostly in margins, 2 pp. stained and with small rebacked blemishes in text, plates of vol. II with watertsain at bottom, 5 plates remargined, 1 plate with mended corner, 1 plate with small rebacked split in gtail margin, with small ownership entry on verso of title. Inside all in all clean copy with lavishly made coppers. Bindings scraped.
