Album with 60 mounted autographs by European rulers, noblemen and military men. With 56 armorial drawings in watercolors (1 in India ink) and 40 decorative cartouches in India ink. From around 1525 to 1775. Late 18th century calf with gilt spine, gilt-tooled border on boards and star-shaped center panel on both boards. Oblong 12mo. 12 unnumb. ll. (1 blank), 60 numb. ll., 64 blank ll.
Remarkable collection of autographs from the library of the English botanist and collector of antiquities Dawson Turner (1775-1858) with his autogr. ownership entry on first leaf. The signatures, mostly cut out from letters and other documents, come from historic French, German and Dutch personalities, among them Philipp II. de Montmorency, "Graaf van Horne", Dutch freedom fighter (1524-1568); Johann Casimir, Duke of Saxe-Coburg (1564-1633); Augustus the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, founder of the Wolfenbüttel Herzog August Library (1579-1666); Cornelius Jansen, theologian and later cardinal, founder of Jansenism (1585-1638); Lamoral Earl of Egmont, Dutch freedom fighter (1522-68); William, Prince of Orange (1533-84); Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736); Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly, commander of the Imperial forces in the Thirty Years' War (1559-1632); Fredrick, landgrave of Hessen-Eschwege (1617-1655) and many more. Almost every mounted name is accompanied by an artful armorial illustration in colors, 40 of the signatures are bordered by decorative cartouches with figurative, landscape and allegoric ornaments; these wonderful drawings were presumably made by members of the art-loving and gifted Turner family. Remarkable and artistically endowed collection. - Slightly foxed, book block broken. Edgeworn, upper spine end and lower third of spine with defective spot.
