"For over half a century, until the publication of the 'Encyclopédie, Bayle's 'Dictionaire' dominated enlightened thinking in every part of Europe" (PMM). - This copy with the features of the rare print mentioned by Ebert: Dedication in red and black, the article David twice, bound in an even form. - With slight isolated browning and minor water stains, 4 ll. with mended tears (trace of glue). - Attached: [Joly, Ph. L.], Remarques critiques sur le dictionnaire de Bayle. 2 parts in 1 vol. Paris and Dijon 1752/1748. Contemp. vellum. Folio. - Lower corner partly with brown stain. Binding shop-soiled, spine end with defective spot.
