"This is one of the most important architectural source books of the eighteenth century" (Blackmer Coll.).
"But it was not a source for the imitation of details that the book was valued, rather as a dispassionate and accurate survey of the architecture of antiquity; it wrested the lead in such matters from the French, and imitated a series of archaeological works that came to characterize the activities of both connoisseurs and architects in England in the second half of the eighteenth century." (Millard Coll.) - Slightly foxed, stronger in places, plate II with marginal tear (ca. 3 cm), plates XXXIX to XLVII with small bumps and splits in the left margin. Edges rubbed, spine and joints restored.
First French edition of the famous publication. 3 full page text engravings and 59 numb. engr. plates. Contemp. calf. with rich gilt decoration. - Slightly foxing, partly somewhat stronger, plate II marginal tear of about 3 cm, plates XXXIX to XLVII slightly bumped in left margin and with small tear. Edes rubbed, spine and joints renewed.
