Sabin 38420. - Ferguson 308. - Henze III, 101. - First oktavo edition, published in the same year as the first quarto edition. - Covers the search for the sailor J. F. de Bruny d'Entrecasteaux, headed by A. R. J. de Bruny, ordered by the French national assembly. During the sailing trip they passed by, among others, Australia, northern New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tongo and New Kaledonia. The work by the French natural scientist La Billiardiéres is of special interest, because of his detailed descriptions of Tasmania and the other islands mentioned above. The expedition ended with Entrecasteaux's death in 1793. "The expedition made several important contributions to geographical knowledge, and the investigations of the naturalists into the productions of countries visited were of special value" (Ferguson). - Without the belonging atlas vol. - Untrimmed, wide-margined copy. Here and there slightly foxed, title with an old signature. Wrappers with damages.
