For Hermann Nitsch, color is a powerful phenomenon. In the course of the act of painting, in which the paint is poured, splashed, smeared and rubbed, traces of this energetic creative process remain on the image carrier. In the present work, paint is covered by paint that runs down vertically. A dark red hue overlays the lighter one below, glossy overlays matte. Like most of his work, this Pour Picture is entirely in red. Nitsch does not choose this color arbitrarily; for him, red has a deeper meaning. For Nitsch it is the color that most intensely stimulates perception, because it is the color of both life and death. In his painting actions, Hermann Nitsch, one of the most important representatives of Viennese Actionism, brings the body into art in a completely new way. His Pour Pictures are impressive testimonies to this artistic act. [EH]
