We are grateful to Hans Geissler, estate Erich Heckel, Hemmenhofen on Lake Constance, for his kind support in cataloging this lot.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Southern Germany (received from artist in ca. 1970).

On this watercolor Erich Heckel shows a canal in the center of the harbor town Sète (until 1928 Cette) in Southern France. The limestone hill Mont Saint-Clair, located in the town's southern outskirts, is visible in the background. Heckel proves great mastery in handling the technique. Based on a detailed charcoal drawing, he adds a picturesque character to the city view through the watercolors. The paper shimmers through in several spots, so that the composition seems airy and fresh - particularly in rendering the color and light atmospheres and the charming reflections on the water he shows great poise.
