Welkende Blüten. 1937.
Oil on firm paper, originally laminated on the backing board.
Monogrammed and dated in pencil in lower right. Titled on the backing board in lower right. Sheet: 70.3 x 49.8 cm (27.6 x 19.6 in). Backing board: 90,5 x 66 cm (35,6 x 26 in).
[JS].
• Early large-size work in which the artist addresses the natural process of bvecoming and decay in a mystic-abstract style on a black ground.
• "Welkende Blüten" anticipates key aspects of Winter's important series "Triebkräfte der Erde", which was regarded the recommencement of abstraction after WW II.
• Works of a similar quality from the 1930s are extremely rare on the international auction market (source: artprice.com).
PROVENANCE: Galerie Günther Franke, Munich.
Private collection Southern Germany (acquired from the above around 50 years ago, ever since family-owned).
Edges with small isolated pinholes and rubbed spots, of which some show color losses, with a paper adhesion in upper left edge. Original backing board rubbed and with obvious traces of glue and dirt. With minor mount staining.
