Roethel 170. Signed. Monogrammed on the stone. One of 200 copies on this type of paper, the complete edition is 230 copies. On machine-made laid paper. 27,3 x 23,1 cm (10,7 x 9 in)Sheet: 35,8 x 28,4 cm (14,1 x 11,3 in).
Plate 7 from the series "Kandinsky. Kleine Welten", published by Propyläen Verlag, Berlin. All sheets are hand prints, which were made at the Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar after the artist's instructions.
This sheet’s technique is a curiosity of this portfolio, as it is thought up as a woodcut in colors, both in terms of its design and the composition’s execution. However, it actually is a lithograph in colors. Kandinsky does not seem to be bothered by this, he is much more interested in the compositions effect: "In all 12 works the 'Small Worlds' gained their necessary language through line and spot ", said the artist. And indeed, the ‘Small Worlds‘ are a world of its own. In terms of form they are typical Kandinky works. It is the artists inner cosmos that echoes in this work, as the proximity to music can be clearly felt in all of Kandinsky’s abstract works. [KD].
