The first edition was published in two volumes in 1854 as Islamism, its rise and progress, or the present and past condition of the Turks . The first edition does not seem to have plates .. The work is basically a history of Islam and includes the Arab caliphates, the Saracens, the Moslems in India, as well as the Ottoman empire. It is carried up to the Crimean War and also contains an account of the Greek revolution" (Blackmer). - Vord. flieg. Vorsatz mit zeitgenöss. Widmung.
