LITERATURE: Pascal Ghyssaert, Prosper de Troyer (1880-1961). Een stijlkritische analyse van zijn tekeningen en schilderijen uit de periode 1906-1939 (unpublished master thesis, University of Gent), Gent 1986 (with illustration on plate 227).

In 1925, the year Erik Satie died, the Belgian Expressionist Prosper De Troyer paid tribute to the composer with this monumental painting, that is a masterpiece from his most important period. After productive experiments with Futurism and geometric abstraction, De Troyer arrived at his distinctively personal figurative style in 1922. Here it is revealed in full flowering: a figuration that is as lively as it is static and so forceful that it bursts with taut power is structured by figures fitted together of basic geometric forms conceived on a large scale. The expressive color concept and the emotive powers of the figures intensify the exhilarating richness and tautness of the composition by this Belgian artist, who was a leading exponent of the European avant-garde, presented here. With his representation of the eccentric composer, De Troyer has thematically aligned himself with Modernist tradition yet his tribute possesses special allegorical profundity: the two women in the background are playing with the representational conventional angel and devil. Whereas as one of them holds a halo over Satie’s head and points to the distance of eternity, the other has opened the “Score of Life” to his page. Satie has been succeeded by the pianist depicted in the middle distance, who can probably be identified as Maurice Ravel. The fiftieth anniversary of Prosper De Troyer’s death will be marked in 2011 by a comprehensive retrospective at the Stedelijke Musea Mechelen. [AT].

In good condition. With slight craquelé in places, somewhat more obvious in the left part of the image. With isolated, partly skilfully retouched color losses in margins.
