Dieser einzigartige Probedruck der Kelmscott-Presse des Buchgestalters und Druckers William Morris (1834-1896) stammt aus dem Besitz des britischen Museumskurators und Sammlers Sydney Carlyle Cockerell (1867-1962). Auf dem vord. Vorsatz findet sich dessen eigenhändiger Eintrag: "These proofs of the first of the lectures by William Morris printed in the 'golden type' at the Chiswick Press were pulled at the Kelmscott Press, where the type was set. S. C. Cockerell". Ebenso ist der Titel der Schrift eigh. von Cockerell an den Anfang des gedruckten Textes geschrieben worden. Im Text finden sich vereinzelt einige Anstreichungen und Korrekturen, mit Wahrscheinlichkeit von Hand William Morris', die eigh. Signatur des Buchkünstlers ist im hint. Innendeckel montiert, über einem gleichfalls montierten Druckzettel: "It is hoped that this lecture, which is printed in the 'Golden' type designed by William Morris for the Kelmscott Press, will be followed by other lectures in the same form .. The Kelmscott Press is now closed, and all the wood blocks of the initials and ornaments have been given to the British Museum. The type still remains under the control of the trustees, for whom this book was printed at the Chiswick Press." - Entsprechend einem ebenfalls eigh. Vermerk auf dem vord.
