Schweizer Alpen I. 1969.
Silkscreen in colors.
Signed. Verso stamped “Gerhard Richter (1969) ‘Schweizer Alpen’ A1 A2 B1 B2 B3,” “A1” circled in pencil. One of 300 copies. On light cardboard. 69.4 x 69.4 cm (27.3 x 27.3 in), the full sheet.
Motif A1. Sheet 1 of a series of five silkscreen prints based on the painting of the same name from 1969 (CR no. of the paintings: 224/1-5), which in turn are based on photographs taken by Richter from the airplane window during a trip to Milan in 1968. Printed by Hans H. Hotze, Essen. Published by the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung, Hamburg. [MH].
• This motif, based on photographs by Gerhard Richter, is exemplary of his view of landscape.
• The depiction of the Swiss Alps in an almost abstract form creates a tension between natural representation and artistic interpretation.
• From October 2025 to March 2026, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris hosts a major retrospective on Gerhard Richter.
PROVENANCE: Private collection (since around 1969).
LITERATURE: Hubertus Butin, Gerhard Richter. Editionen 1965-2013, Cologne 2014, CR no. 20 (illu., different copy).
