Inscribed "Alert" in lower margin. 42 x 67 cm (16,5 x 26,3 in), size of image.
Bordered in black India ink. Margin painted with gray gouache. Unexamined out of the frame.
The decorative ship portrait, executed in the style of the family de Simone from Naples, shows the iron propeller steamer with three-master schooner rigging, built in Glasgow in 1870 by A. Stephens & Son, measuring 512 GRT. Bought by Robert M. Sloman & Co. in 1871, the ship was lost near Cape Finisterre in 1885.
