PROVENANCE: Private collection Vienna.
Wolfgang Hollegha, pioneer of abstract-expressive painting in Austria, founded the painters' group St. Stephan together with Markus Prachensky, Arnulf Rainer and Josef Mikl in 1956. The artist was awarded the Guggenheim Prize in 1958, the following year the New York art critic Clement Greenberg invited him to participate in a group exhibition with stars of American abstraction, such as Barnett Newman and Kenneth Noland. Consequentially, Hollegha showed works twice in the Guggenheim Museum New York and in 1964 on the documenta III in Kassel. On occasion of the artist's 80th birthday Hollegha's impulsive paintings were presented in a large exhibition in the Galerie Ulysses, Vienna. In 1990 he was awarded the medal of honor by the City of Vienna. Works by Hollegha are in possession of numerous renowned collections, such as the Albertina, Vienna, and the collection Essl, Klosterneuburg. [JS].
