In his work he provides the embryonic theoretical distinction between architecture and building ... Even though the woodcuts that illustrate these books are coarse and undetailed ... their starkness is quite modern and very effective for the design of fortifications." (Millard) - Die expressiven Holzschnitte zeigen Festungsanlagen, Kanonen, Meilenzeiger, Jakobsstäbe, Kutschen etc. sowie zahlr. technische Maschinen und Geräte wie Kräne, Gewinde, Hebel, Wasserräder, Pumpen etc. - Ohne die bei Fowler erwähnte, mit 11 num. Falttafel zwischen S. 66 und 67; vorlieg. Expl. jedoch mit der an dieser Stelle eingeb. nicht num. Taf. mit dem Lageplan von Cremona. Offenbar wurden nicht allen Exemplaren beide Tafeln eingebunden (vgl. den Eintrag des Ital. Verbundkatalogs: IT/ICCU/UBOE/020494). - Falttafeln tlw. gleichmäßig schwach gebräunt und mit Falzrissen. Schönes Exemplar.
Rare first edition. With fig. woodcut title-border, woodcut portrait, 5 folding woodcut plates (of 6?) and 89 woodcuts in text (81 full-page). Contemp. vellum with ms. title on spine. - Fowler mentions 6 folding plates, according to that here lacking plate no. 11 between pp. 66-67, but with the not numb. plate of Cremona. Cf. also the entry of ICCU which refers 5 plates. - Plates evenly browned and partly with tears in the foldings. Fine copy.
