Gegenstücks The dance of life. - Ausgesprochen liebevoll gezeichnete und sorgsam kolor. Karikaturen von Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827). "He was one of the major caricaturists to become an extensive book illustrator" (Houfe). "Indispensable to any Rowlandson collection, one of the essential privots of any color plate library, beeing one of the main works of Rowlandson" (Tooley). - The Dance of life ist nicht wirklich als Gegenstück des Dance of death zu verstehen, da es keine inhaltlichen Entsprechungen gibt, es handelt sich hierbei vielmehr um die "Lebensgeschichte einer Einzelperson als Typus und steht somit, besonders auch was die Illustrationen angeht, am Anfang der ausgedehnten englischen Familiengeschichten-Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts" (Kritter, Art of Illustration 3). - Schwach gebräunt und tlw. gering fleckig. Einbd. berieben. Insgesamt schönes Exemplar.First editions. 2 colored engr. frontispieces, 2 engr. titles with color. vignette and 96 colored aquatint plates. Contemp. calf with gilt fillet border, gilt spine, gilt fleurons on edges and top edge gilt. - Untrimmed, slightly browned and partly littlestained, binding rubbed. Overall a fine copy.
