Nacht-Angriff. 1932.
Good overall impression. Small dent upper right. Edges negligibly rubbed.
Oil on canvas.
Monogrammed and dated lower right. Signed, dated "1. Juni 1932", titled and inscribed "Brandenburg" on the reverse. Once more signed, dated "21. VI. 33" and inscribed "Brdbg. Havel" on the upper edge of the folded canvas. 48,3 : 64 cm (19 : 25,1 in). When Ehrhardt painted his war pictures around 1933 from memories of the first world war, he must have known Otto Dix’s haunting triptych Der Krieg (1929-1932). Those passionate appeals were ignored as were the apocalyptic visions of bombed-out cities painted by Ludwig Meidner before the first world war. In Dix and in Ehrhardt, war is depicted from the standpoint of those affected by it. There is no place for heroics. [KD]
