The nice illustrations served as models for future illustrations in European herbals, even more than those from the folio edition. "The woodcuts are copied on a reduced scale ... the execution is so excellent that Heller in his 'Geschichte der Holzschneidekunst' even prefers them to those of the large edition." (Klebs p. 60). - Title and first 3 ll. of the preface lacking, however, here replaced in facsimile. - Somewhat stained, 2 ll. with small tear, pastedown and flying endpaper with entries by an old hand. Binding slightly bumped, spine and corners renewed.
First German octavo edition. 516 fullpage botanical woodcuts. Restored 18th cent. calf. - For this more handy and economical pocket edition of his famous herbal, Fuchs produced identical copies of his large botanical woodcuts in reduced size. They remained a popular example of European botanical illustration during the next centuries. - Lacking the print title and three leaves of the foreword which are here replaced by facsimile. Somewhat stained, 2 leaves with small tear, endpapers with ms. entries by an old hand. Binding somewhat rubbed, spine and corners restored.
