Howitt came from a wealthy family and was initially occupied with sports. For financial reasons he taught himself painting and worked as painting teacher at a private school in London. He had his debut in the Free Society of Artists with glass window designs showing hunting scenes in 1783 From that point on up until 1815 he regularly showed his paintings and watercolors of landscapes and animals at the large exhibitions of the Royal Academy. Howitt became particularly famous for his graphic works. He executed models for many aquatint series, some of which he engraved himself. In terms of themes, their focus is also on animals, hunting and sports: "Oriental Field Sports" (40 ll., 1807), "Collection of British Field Sports" (20 ll., 1807), "The Anglers Manual" (12 ll., 1808), "A New Work of Animals [..]" (56 ll., 1811), "Group of Animals" (24 ll., 1811), "The British Sportsman" (70 ll., 1812).
