Typographisch und illustrativ eine der schönsten Bibeln, mit den fein geschnittenen und detailreichen Holzschnitten von Bernard Salomon. "Considerably work could be done on Salomon's sources for these cuts. The Expulsion from Paradise suggests Holbein's version; the New Testament shows some dependence on the set owned by Sébastien Gryphius ... But the cumulative effect of Salomon's carefully detailed scenes is that of an indiviual contribution to Bible illustration." (Mortimer) - Ohne die letzten beiden w. Bll. (eines davon mit Fleuron-Ornament). - Erste und letzte Bll. gering fleckig, sonst wohlerhaltenes Exemplar in einem Meistereinband von Chambolle, der 1863 die Werkstatt von Hippolyte Duru übernahm (vgl. Flety S. 65).
First de Tournes Latin Bible, based on Robert Estienne's text. One of the finest printed Bible editions, beautifully illustrated with 198 woodcuts by B. Salomon (115 for the Old Testament, and 83 for the New). Brown morocco on raised bands by Chambolle-Duru, inside richly gilt borders, marbled pastedowns and gilt edges. - Lacking the last 2 blanks (one of which with fleuron). Minor staining to first and last leaves, else well preserved copy in a fine masterbinding.
