Im Garten. Wohl um 1910.
Pen and India ink drawing.
Signed lower left. On paper, laid on board. 14.5 x 22.5 cm (5.7 x 8.8 in), the full sheet. Backing board: 20 x 28 cm (7,8 x 11 in).
Our drawing shows great formal resemblance with the etching "Im Garten", which Schiefler dated 1910. The painting of the waterside garden café "Restaurant «De Oude Vink in Leyden», dated 1905 by Eberle, also shows a similar ambiance. This India ink drawing is part of a long series of beer garden and garden café motifs that Liebermann pursued over a couple of years. As far as its style is concerned, the partly easy and partly hectic zigzag line management emanates the impression as if the very moment has been captured.
This work's authenticity has been orally confirmed by Drs. Margreet Nouwen, Berlin. We are grateful for her expert advice.
PROVENANCE: Collection Wilhelm König, Vienna (verso of backing board with collector's stampd)
Collection Werner Eberhard Müller, Leipzig (since 1924, lower right and verso of backing board with collector's stamp).
