Seltene zweite überarbeitete Auflage der berühmten Pyrosophia , die erstmals 1698 erschien. - Der Utrechter Arzt und Chemiker J. C. Barchusen (1666-1723) war einer der ersten Vertreter des universitären Lehrfaches Chemie, das bis dahin der Medizin untergeordnet war. Barchusen verfaßte vier Lehrbücher zur Chemie. - Die bemerkenswerten Tafeln mit 78 ungewöhnlichen alchemistischen Illustrationen sowie der großen Ansicht eines chemischen Laboratoriums der Universität Utrecht, an der Barchusen lehrte, wurden mehrfach in späterer Literatur abgebildet, darunter in C. G. Jung’s Psychologie und Alchemie oder in Carons und Hutins Les Alchimistes . Der weiße nicht illustrierte Kupferabdruck wird nur bei Cole erwähnt. - "A formal, systematic textbook that deals with the principles of chemistry, both theoretical and practical, and then attempts to demonstrate their applications to natural philosophy, medicine, metallurgy, and alchemy" (DSB I, 451). - Vereinz. etw. fleckig, Titel leicht gebräunt, Falttaf. mit minim. Reissue of Barchusen's "Pyrosophia" of 1698. Important work on chemistry and alchemy, much sought after for its curious illustrations. These include a very fine and unusual set of 19 plates containing 78 symbolic representations of alchemical operations. In addition to these hermetic plates, the work includes a folding plate showing the interior of the chemical laboratory of Utrecht. With engr. title vignette, engr. headpiece on dedication and 25 engr. plates (1 folding, 1 printed blank). Contemp, calf with gilt spine, rebacked retaining original spine. - Here and there stained, title browned, folding plate with minim. marginal defects, title and front inner pastedown with owner's entry. Binding rubbed.
