Pelikan. 1941-1943.
Mixed media. Tempera, pastel and pencil.
Signed, dated and titled as well as inscribed "Potsdam" and "Nr. 16" on the reverse. On firm Schoellershammer paper (with the blindstamp). 101 x 72 cm (39.7 x 28.3 in), the full sheet.
[AR].
• A marvelous example of Theodor Werner's organically inspired compositions from the early 1940s.
• In family ownership for more than 40 years.
PROVENANCE: Galerie Zimmer, Düsseldorf.
Private collection Germany.
Ever since in family possession.
LITERATURE: Brigitte Lohkamp, Theodor Werner. Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der deutschen abstrakten Malerei und Künstlerästhetik, PhD thesis, Munich 1975, no. 45.
In good condition. With pinholes along the edges of the sheet, a tiny loss of paper in the upper right. A few small tears and creases along the edges, as well as with isolated spots of minimal color abrasion. However, the structures and scratches in the image are inherent to the production process and thus part of the work's nature.
