Hermine Gallia, sitzend nach rechts aufgestürzt. Um 1903/04.
Pencil drawing.
Strobl 1017. On creme paper, laid on delicate Japon. 45,1 x 30,6 cm (17,7 x 12 in), size of sheet.
This drawing is a study for the painting "Bildnis Hermine Gallia" from 1903/1904 (Novotny-Dobai 138), which today is in possession of the National Gallery, London.
EXHIBITION: Gustav Klimt, Arnoldi-Livie, Munich 1972, no. 21 (without printed catalog).
Kunsthandel Wienerroither & Kohlbacher, Vienna (with two labels on rear frame).
The very well-documented work of drawings by Gustav Klimt delivers proof of an unflagging creativeness. Countless studies make for a solid basis for his paintings. In this work Klimt captured the contours of the depicted person in swift, energetic and striking strokes of the brush. Hermine Gallia, née Hamburger (1870-1936), was the wife of Moritz Gallia, a government official, who would become a renowned art patron. The painting is in possession of the National Gallery in London today. Further studies for the portrait of Hermine Gallia can be found in the Albertina, Vienna and the Neue Galerie am Joanneum, Graz.
