EXHIBITION: Galerie Hans Neuendorf, Hamburg (with inscription on verso).
Waddington Galleries Ltd., London.
From Figure to Object: A Century of Sculptors` Drawings, Karsten Schubert, Frith Street Gallery, London 1996.
Our charcoal drawing, on which a standing figure put its left hand on the right shoulder, was made in preparation for Baselitz's limewood sculpture "Ohne Titel" from 1982-83, which is in the Tate Gallery, London. This is one of the reasons why the figure is not shown upside down, as it is characteristic of the artist's work:"I put both painting and drawings upside down, but not the sculptures. To me the only way to make a painting or a drawing is by putting it upside down. That's different with the sculptures. The fact that a sculpture is not represented upside down does not mean that what I do is different, but it means that the method is not an artistic speculation but rather a way of doing what I want to do." (From: Georg Baselitz, Skulpturen und Zeichnungen 1979-1987, Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hanover 1987, quote after: Siegfried Gohr, Kunst als Akt des Schaffens und Zerstörens, in: Künstler Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartskunst, edition 18, p. 14).
