Stamped with the blue Nachlass mark lower right (Lugt 2307). With very faint inscription upper right. On paper. 33,5 : 21 cm (13,1 : 8,2 in), size of sheet. Very beautiful preliminary study of the 'Bücherwurm' (Wichmann 534-541). The motif of the disconnected outsider who lives in his own world and complety devotes himself to the acquisition of knowledge is taken up by Spitzweg and characterised in a tenderly-ironic fashion in several paintings. Good overall impression. Irregularly discoloured. Verso with an old paper strip mount along the edges, recto slightly overlapping. With a small tear at the upper sheet edge.
