Caracciolus, R., Sermones quadragesimales de poenitentia. Daran: Sermo II in festo annuntiationis B.V.M. - Sermo de praedestinato numero damnatorum. - Sermo de catenis. First text l. (a3) with historicised initial on gilt ground (portrait of Caracciolus) with two-sided tendril border of leaves, blossoms and gold spots in colors, as well as a small illustration in feather of a bird, with gilt-bordered armorial miniature below (red dragon on blue.-white escutcheon). Text with lombards drawn in red and blue all the way through, of which over 70 with fleuronné. [Venedig], Wendelin von Speyer, 20 July 1472. Contemp. blind-tooled wooden boards with vellum endpapers (spine renewed). 4to. 290 unnumb. ll. (of which 3 ll. blank). Gothic type. 40 lines, mostly rubricated.

GW 6061. - Hain/Cop. 4424. - Goff C 165. - BMC V, 159. - BSB C-129. - Rare first edition . - The famous preacher Robertus Caracciolus, Franciscan and bishop of Aquino, wrote this collection of sermons during the pontificate of Paul II. it contains "73 sermons for the days from Sunday LXX to Tuesday after Easter; for the Sundays Invocavit to Iudica each 2 sermons, for Maundy Thursday 3 sermons" (GW). Some twenty editions were released up until 1497. - Slightly foxed in places and with some waterstains. Boards rubbed and scuffed. Inside fine and broad-margined copy (isolated témoins) with contemp. red and brown marginalia.
