What Pechstein sought to illustrate in this work is the ordinary rural life. Surely no coincidence: The working life of simple countryfolk, one of Pechstein's preferred motifs during these summers, reveals nothing less than an ideal. This is where Pechstein, as well as his contemporaries, found an authentic life in harmony with nature, close to the roots that modern man had lost. [SM]
