In the years between 1927 and 1929 Böckstiegel portrayed many animals in the Dresden zoo. "At the moment I am entirely focussed on working in the Dresden zoo, making portraits of all the animals: lions, monkeys, tigers, leopards, camels, yaks, buffaloes and everything on legs. It is marvelous, just the animals’ captivity makes me sad." (Transl. of quote.: Böckstiegel in a letter from Dresden dated 14 march, 1927, to the jeweler Rudolf Feldmann in Bielefeld). [DB]
