PROVENANCE: Rosenbaum contemporary, Boca Raton (with label on the stretcher).

The equal coexistence of striking portraits and deserted landscapes characterizes Alex Katz' pictorial oeuvre. The landscape as a metaphoric dimension is a recurrent theme in his entire work. It is not only perceived as natural landscape in a conventional sense, but rather like an optional playground for various correlations and constellations. Acordingly, the artist employs the subject in order to provide a sort of prevailing mood which allows the reflection of social or philosophical questions of our reality of life. This work "Sunset 2“ was also made during his important late period of creation. Deep black branches contrast shades of orange and turquois in back light. Katz explores the intensity of a sunset in Maine, where he has had a summer studio since the 1950s, by combining the strong and powerful silhouettes and examining the different qualities of the light.
