Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated lower right. 43,3 : 50,3 cm (17 : 19,8 in). Not much is known about the life of Louis Seel, except that he was a painter and printmaker who studied at the Karlsruhe Art Academy. He began studying architecture to please his father but soon dropped out. In 1901 he immatriculated at the Städelschule in Frankfort to study painting and finished in 1905. The following year Seel went to Paris and stayed there for several years. In Paris he made the acquaintance of Henri Matisse. The present painting was probably done while Louis Seel was travelling in Spain, far from the usual destinations sought out by young artists, most of whom were drawn at that time to either Italy or France. [HL]
In good condition, colours still fresh. Minor rubbing on the margins. Isolated tiny brown stains and minor craquelé.
