Up tothe early 1960s Lichtenstein’s work is marked by an expressive, abstract style. In1961, since the exhibition of his painting „Look Mickey“ representing Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck on a boat pier, Lichtenstein’s earlier style is replaced by his well-known pictorial language imitating the style of comic books. Oriented towards the print version of comics Lichtenstein started to separate the color fields in his paintings and prints into regular grid-like color points and to integratethe speech bubbles which also characterize the comic culture as visual elements into his art. „Sweet Dreams Baby!“ along with the other sheet in the „11 Pop Artists“ portfolio is known as the earliest printing testimony of this new fundamental style which characterizes Roy Lichtenstein’s work.
