In terms of its styler, the oil painting is in context of the "Steinbruch" pictures (stone pit), which were made around 1948 (cf. Marlis Schwengers, Stilistische und ikonographische Studien zu seinem Werk, Cologne 1985, p. 328, cat. nos. G 270 and G 271 and Alfred Hentzen, Werner Gilles, Cologne 1960, no. 85 with illu. in black and white). [CB].
