"The aggressive territorial expansion of Germany and the political reorganizations which were imposed on many of the states ... made it necessary to revise the maps ... in rapid succession ... The result was an almost continuous reworking of the 'Stieler' ". (Espenhorst/Engl. A.). - "Da Gotha erst kurz vor Kriegsende besetzt wurde, konnte die Produktion bei Perthes bis zum Frühjahr 1945 fortgesetzt werden. Die letzte Auflage des Stieler, deren Blätter ab Oktober 1944 gedruckt wurden, konnte allerdings kaum noch verkauft werden, da das unbesetzte Gebiet Deutschlands täglich kleiner wurde. Es ist daher anzunehmen, daß nur noch wenige Exemplare in den Handel kamen." (Espenhorst S. 93) - Our copy is from this last stage of production 1944-45: Atlas bound in red half cloth as used for the last copy from beginning of 1945 (instead of the preceding half calf). Well preserved.
